Prof. Monamma Kokkad is one of Kerala's most respected social reformers, motivational speakers, educators, writers, and advocates for human dignity. For over five decades, she has dedicated her life to empowering individuals, strengthening families, promoting women's rights, and inspiring positive social changes through education, awareness, and compassionate action.

A former Professor of English with 32 years of distinguished academic service, Prof. Monamma Kokkad rose to national prominence by initiating the landmark Public Interest Litigation that led to the historic ban on smoking in public places in Kerala in 1999—an achievement that later influenced similar action across India. Her unwavering commitment to justice, public health, and constitutional rights has earned her widespread admiration.

As a former Member of the Kerala State Women's Commission, she has championed the causes of women, children, youth, and marginalized communities. She is the founder of transformative initiatives including Never Me, We For You, We For Students, and Jeevajyothi, touching thousands of lives through self-protection, education, student sponsorship, humanitarian services, and value-based youth development.

The Story

From a smoke-filled train compartment to the halls of justice, a teacher carried not anger, but hope.Her courage became a landmark judgment making history and safeguarding public health for generations.

A teacher's silent suffering became a nation's voice. In 1999, her determination led to a historic Kerala High Court judgment banning smoking in public places—the world's first High Court verdict of its kind, setting a global benchmark for public health and citizens' rights.

Born into the Valakuzhy family in Mallappally, Kerala, she completed her Bachelor's degree from Assumption College, Changanacherry and her Master's degree from St. Thomas College, Palai.

She was the Professor of English for 32 years in BCM College, Kottayam. In recognition of her commitment to social justice, she was appointed as a member of the Kerala State Women's Commission in 2000. She was later appointed as the Director of Kerala State Minority Development Finance Corporation in 2016.A pioneering leader, Ln Prof Monamma Kokkad became Kerala's first Lady District Governor of Lions Clubs International during 2008–2009, providing visionary leadership to the world's biggest service organisation.

In 1999, she achieved a historic legal milestone by securing a landmark judgement from the Kerala High Court banning smoking in public places. The judgement is widely recognized as the first High Court order of its kind anywhere in the world, setting a precedent for public health advocacy.

In 2017, she founded the #NeverMe™ movement, an innovative child protection initiative that equips girls with the awareness, confidence and life skills needed to save themselves from sexual exploitation. A strong fire is instilled into children,especially girls which empowers them to say emphatically "I will never become a victim". She has directly reached nearly 1,00,000 children across Kerala. An acclaimed motivational speaker and trainer, she has inspired thousands of students, parents, teachers, professionals and community leaders through her seminars. Prof.Monamma Kokkad is also a prolific writer with nearly 3,000 published articles in English and Malayalam and is also the author of 3 books.

She is the founder of the charitable organisations We For You and We For Students, and one of the founders of Jeevajyothi, a value-based personality development programme for youth. She is the Patron of Kerala Federation of the Blind and also of FACE Charity. She is an acclaimed YouTube content creator. Her unwavering commitment to public service still continues with full vigour and impact.
